Facing the Light [ang.]

Autor: Geras, Adele

The story focuses on the descendants of the late Enthan Walsh, the infamous English painter. Ethan was a short-tempered rather arrogant individual. Before he died, he made Leonora, his only daughter, to promise that his paintings will never leave their house, Willow Court.Approaching Leonora’s 75th birthday, all the family members were gathered at the Court, the place where Leonora has always stayed all of her life. Children, grandchildren and a great grandchild came to celebrate

Leonora’s birthday. Willow Court has taken care all of them sometime on their childhood and being together again in Willow Court has brought back some good and bad memories even revealed the evil scheme that previously laid in enigma. This is my second book of Geras’ and so far I really adore the way she tells stories because I could feel its warmness. The book is quite thick (503 pages) with many characters involved. Love, hate, friendship, fraud and greedy are common themes for human-related story. This book is no different. But the way Geras linked her characters, their secrets and feelings has made the book very much enjoyable to make me keep on reading it.The problems, conversations, desires are so belivable. The story plot is also realistic because we may found similar stories about family relationship on our daily life. She used flashback without losing the nuance of each generation to reveal the secrets one-by-one. The fishy background of Ethan’s famous paintings was actually hanging since the first chapter, maybe because I read suspense books too much. But Geras had made me sticked to my reading because I want more. I want to know the “how-why-when" side of the story. I was satisfied indeed.
